Re(visions) #101 Exciting therapies

October 8th, 2009

I have a friend who is exploring some alternative and complimentary therapies and wanted some advice from me.  I was collecting information on the Net for a naturopathic doctor in her area and went to a site that I had been to before.  Earlier in the summer I learned a little about Bowen Therapy which is a series of gentle moves over muscles and tendons that address the functioning of the body at many levels.  It is another really fascinating therapy.  But what I found yesterday got me so excited that I want to share it with you.

I am reading a book called Beating Cancer with Nutrition by Dr Patrick Quillin.  He writes about how with a really intensive diet of whole foods and fresh fruits and vegetables we can cure many cancers that people become inflicted with.  Our bodies are starving for nutrients to fight against cancer and degenerative and chronic diseases within the unstable and toxic environment that we live in; if we feed our bodies what they need then they can start the healing process.  For a cancer that is well established and all the nutritional needs are being met then specifically trained doctors, like Dr Quillin, can also apply a therapy that entails injections of vitamins and minerals into the blood stream (and sometimes muscles) to combat the cancer.  This therapy can be used in conjuction with or instead of conventional therapies like chemo and radiation.   So, when I was on the site I found out that this clinic uses this injection therapy.  I was so excited to see that someone in our area has the knowledge and can help people with this disease or other diseases in a more natural way.  I phoned the clinic right away and I asked for an interview with the doctor.  I have an appointment with her for Tuesday to find out more about her practice and her training and her experiences.

I will be sharing my findings soon.  There is just so much information out there on healing therapies outside of invasive drugs and toxic therapies.  I realize everyday, as I hear about new therapies, just how many options we have in our journey to staying healthy.

Life is a truly humbling and inspiring experience, isn’t it?

Nutritional Tip -

Here is a nutritional myth debunked.  I got the information from www.healthcastle.com .

Myth - Brown Sugar is better than White Sugar
The brown sugar sold at grocery stores is actually white granulated sugar with added molasses. Yes, brown sugar contains minute amounts of minerals. But unless you eat a gigantic portion of brown sugar every day, the mineral content difference between brown sugar and white sugar is absolutely insignificant.

baking with no fat - banana muffins

October 5th, 2009

I wanted to try and elimnate fat in this muffin recipe to see if we can get away with it.  So I read a couple of recipes and used my standard and made some substitutions.

Intead of putting in the oil (I use olive oil normally) I put in an equal amout of peach puree.  I figured it would supply moisture and the egg was still there to hold everything together.

I doubled the recipe which I find tends to make it harder to get a nice rise out of muffins cause you have to stire more but I did it anyway.  The muffins came out of the pan nicely! Whew!  First step to good muffins.

Taste test - while they are still warm I do a taste test - good flavour, very moist

texture - nicely squishy from the moisture - perhaps a little rubbery - is this because of not containing?

Next day- really nice flavour - I think I can taste the peach.  Still nicely moist.  Still slightly rubbery but perhaps a little better after sitting.  Maybe I’ve tried too many and can’t tell anymore…:)

So, no fat muffins are possible.  What a great way to supplement your nutrition with homemade, fat-free muffins!

Recipe - I took the Banana Nut Muffin recipe from the Joy of Cooking (my cooking bible) and left out the nuts for my kids’ lunches and substituted equal parts puree (I used peach but you can use apple or pear).  That’s it!  Seeds would be a great addition or chopped dates.  Yum!

Re(visions) #100 My hecto-etip

October 1st, 2009

Good Morning,

Isn’t this exciting!  This is my hundredth Re(visions) - thus my hecto-etip!

Did you know these facts around the number 100?  -

there are 100 tiles in the game of Scrabble  -  my favourite game;

100% represents wholeness, purity, or perfection (no error in a test or no contaminants in a product)  - I’m into purity but no one can be perfectly pure and whole  and it’s ok to aim for a high number but don’t knock yourself out to be perfect.

1-100CE    The first century Greek physician, Dioscorides, recommended the use of orchid tubers as an aphrodisiac.
(NH, 4/97, p.77)  - even then they all about natural remedies!?!?!?!?

1-100CE    The 1st century Roman gourmet, Marcus Gavius Apicius, was thought to be the writer of the earliest known cookbook.    (SFEC, 4/16/00, Z1 p.2)  -  I wonder if they used MSG or too much salt (see my nutrional Tip this week)

Pythagoreans considered 100 as divinely divine because it is the square (10 x 10) of the divine decad (10). - Hmm, well, I don’t know what to say about this except that we are all “divinely divine” not just the number 100.

Thank you to my Re(visions) readers both new and old.  I hope that you have enjoyed reading my weekly givings and though they have changed in nature over the last two years the nature in which they have been given has never changed - with much gratitude.

Nutritional Tip -

SALT!  Be careful it’s everywhere.  Lurking in the darkest corners and the most unexpected places.  Prepared foods, of course, are high in salt and some restaurant foods are packed with salt in order to increase the taste and to get people to come back for more.  The big chain restaurants are the biggest culprits - 1330 mg of salt in a Junior Beef Burger from Montana’s, made for kids - kids maximum daily recommended intake for salt (age 9-13) is 1000 mg!  They get all their salt intake plus more in one burger.  Imagine what’s in the adult versions.  Baby food is another place you wouldn’t expect to find high salt but they add it because they claim the adults won’t be it if it doesn’t taste good to them so they add salt to appease the adults!  The prediction is that young Canadians will suffer heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems at increasingly younger ages unless something is done.  There is an action group at the government level to reduce sodium in these foods but so far there has been no action.  It is our responsibility to make sure those foods are eaten as “treats” than as part of our regular diets and to ask questions of our retailers and restauranteurs - let them know we are watching and concerned.  See http://www.theglobeandmail.com/special-reports/hard-to-shake/  for more information.

Re(visions) #99 The Sweetness of Life & Honey

September 24th, 2009

Happy Thursday,

Often people attempt to live their lives backwards; they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want, so they will be happier.  The way it actually works is the reverse.  You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want.  ~Margaret Young

I thought I would pass this quote on to you today.  I think it speaks to how we wait for life to happen and we don’t realize that is it is already happening and we should just enjoy it.  It speaks to me in many ways this week.

Life is Sweet. Enjoy!

Nutritional Tip

Honey - is a great subsitution for sugar.  Honey is high in antioxidants and has a wide range of vitamins and minerals.  Honey can also be beneficial for your allergies - eat local honey as they feed off local plants and help you build up a tolerance to the plants that bother you.  This is a typical homeopathic treatment - treating like with like.  Honey is great for your skin and wounds since it is a natural antiseptic.  And, of course, it is great when you have a sore throat.  Click here to get even more information on nature’s oldest sweetner.  I have a new jar of local honey that I am waiting to crack open.  Yum!

“Well,” said Pooh, “what I like best,” and then he had to stop and think.  Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn’t know what it was called.  ~A.A. Milne

Nutritional Tip -

Just 47 pistachios, a one-ounce serving, contains 13 grams of predominantly monounsaturated fat and no cholesterol. All nuts, including pistachios, contain some saturated fat but are considered low in saturated fat. Fats are a concentrated source of energy and play an important role in assisting the body to absorb fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, E, D, and K.

Pistachios are the richest source of potassium of all the nut family. The potassium content of one ounce of pistachios is equal to that of one orange, a whopping 310 mg. Two ounces of pistachios contain more potassium than one medium banana. More of the pistachio’s nutritional attributes for one ounce include 2 mg. vitamin C, 66 IU vitamin A, 44.9 mg magnesium, 16.5 mcg folic acid, 1.9 mg. iron, 38.3 mg. calcium, 5.8 g protein, and 3.1 g dietary fiber.

That single ounce of pistachios carries more than 10% of the Daily Value for dietary fiber, vitamin B6, thiamine, magnesium, phosphorous, and copper.

In comparing raw pistachios to dry roasted, you will find that some nutrients are diminished when the nuts are dry roasted, such as only 19.8 mg vitamin C, .9 mg iron, 36.9 mg. magnesium, and 275 mg. potassium compared to the higher figures noted above.

Re(visions) #97 taking control of our health

September 10th, 2009

Good Morning,

I am into day 3, that is 3 days in a row of being on my own, I am getting into the groove and thoroughly enjoying my independence.  Thanks for your notes last week after Re(visions)  they were much appreciated.

I have been thinking some more on how we, as free and independent people, can begin to foster our own health care instead of leaving it in the hands of general practitioners and government (in Canada we get alot of our health care paid for) who don’t have the time or the education to go beyond treating the symptoms.   To be fair some GP’s and Nurse Practitioners do inquire as to your mental and emotional health but if there is anything really wrong they don’t have the extra time to guide you in any depth.  They will give a few pointers about getting enough sleep and getting some exercise which both very valid but many times this is not enough. There are times when they will refer us to specialist - 6 months to 1 year later we might actually get to see that specialist - look at all the time that has passed!  We, as individuals, need to get involved in our own healing and maintence of our bodies and souls.

There are three steps as I see it so far (I’m still not done the book…I know, I’m slow. :) ) to  take responsibility for our mind, body and soul.

1. The desire and commitment (both a monetary and a time commitment) to put yourself and your body first.  The realization that  your health should come before all else as there is nothing else without your health.

2. Willingness to be open and learn about how to keep healthy. Think outside the box of “I’ll see what my doctor says”.  Do some research, find some holistic partners - they know SO much about the body and its intricacies.

3.  Have fun with it!  Use your instincts to point you in the direction that makes most sense for you.  There is so much information out there.  Do it on your own, form a group, hire someone to help you.  It has to interest you so find your interest in terms of your health and go from there.

Nutritional Tip

Being into nutrition and witnessing how food affects myself and others around me brings the old phrase “you are what you eat” into light.  I found a fun link that I wanted to share with you.  I wanted to know the origin of the phrase and I found this piece.   Enjoy!

P.S. - I used what was left of the pumpkin I used to make cookies and some loaves of bread for the kids lunches in our meatloaf on the weekend.  It made the meatloaf really moist and nobdy knew the difference.  I told my husband afterward and he was surprised!

Re(visions) #95 Ralph Waldo Emerson speaks…

September 3rd, 2009
Maybe this is first step to taking responsitibility for your own health.

“Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs.”

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Re(visions) #96 Personal update

September 3rd, 2009

Good morning,

An update on me - this is our last week of summer holidays.  The kids go back to school on the 8th and it will be time to bring my business into full-time mode since both kids will be in school full time.  I am beginning a new stage of life and while I appreciate the opportunity I had to stay at home with my kids I am looking forward to this new phase with enthusiasm.  I’m ready to do my happy dance on Tuesday. :)  I am not sure what my business will look like yet in full-time mode but ideas and avenues are opening up for me and I can only hope that I can make the right decsisions and appreciate decisions that I make that aren’t so right as learning tools.  Thank you to my readers for supporting me and reading my weekly contributions and for responding to them too - I love hearing from you.  I will keep you updated.

Change always comes bearing gifts.  ~Price Pritchett

Nutritional Tip -

Fall Vegetables - take advantage of the fall, fresh vegetables - squash is a great example.  It is loaded with good stuff for our bodies to thrive - potassium, vitamin c, vitamin b1, folate, fibre, vitamin a and so much more.  I had a friend tell me that she put squash in her meatloaf and it was really yummy.  She just added 1 1/2 to her recipe and maybe a few more oats and that was it.  They don’t really like squash so this was a great way to get their nutrients and not have to taste it!  Awesome idea,  I am going to try it.  To learn more about squash click here ,

Re(visions) #94

August 20th, 2009

As free, independent people we have  responsibilities.  Some responsibilities we take really seriously and some… not so much.  What we take seriously depends on our values and the societal expectations around us.  Our health is where many of us fall short - we hand the responsibility of our body over to our doctor.  Why?  Because that is what we have been doing for many decades; they have a degree in healing and they know more than we do.  At least that is what we tell ourselves.  In actuality we know more about our body than anyone else will ever know - we just have to pay attention to to what our body and our mind is telling us.  Can you tell I am still reading Healing Happens with Your Help?

I was reading ahead which isn’t my style but I am anxious to get to the part on how we change the way we think so that we don’t make ourselves sick.  Here’s a piece from the book that caught my eye.

“If you’re serious about turning your health around, get and stay involved in the healing process - even when you’re feeling better.  Achieving and sustaining well-being is an ongoing effort.  It’s a way of thinking and a lifestyle that mean maintaining a positive attitude.

When looking at what it takes to heal ourselves, I think Confucius stated it simply:

Tell me, and I will forget; show me, and I will remember; involve me, and I will understand.”

What does this mean for us as free and independent people?  We need to start listening to our bodies and listening to our instincts and work with our doctors to learn more about what could be going on with our bodies.  It means collaboration and openness from all parties.  It means not being satisfied with the standard answer and prescription.  We need to dig deep and solve the mysteries of our own being.

How do we do that?  You might ask… hmm, well let me think about that…

Nutritional Tip -

Try a stir fry with fresh veggies and a lean white meat.  They offer variety (you can pick and choose your veggies to your liking) and since stir fries don’t require long cooking time so the vitamins and minerals remain intact.   Different herbs and spices also offer variety for different tastes - for example, I love ginger in my stir fries!  If you search for a stir fry recipe on-line you will find a plethera of options.  Have fun with it.

Re(visions) #93 Doctors of the future…

August 13th, 2009

“The docotor of the future will give no medicine, but will instruct his patient in the care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease”.  Thomas Edison

This is has been my dream and the root of my epiphany last winter.  I found the quote in Carol Ritberger’s book that I am reading.  I am fascinated that someone like Mr Edison predicted something like this and it has not yet come true.  Outside influences have pushed holistic, traditional ways to the side in the name of commercialism and in the name of money.

My hope is that more holistic wellness centres, similar to the centre that I hope to open,  will be created and flourish and the practioners will teach people how to read and look after their bodies on their own.

Nutritional Tip -

We are the only mammals who drink milk into adulthood!  And we drink milk from a source other than our own species which no other mammal does?  What does that say?  In the beginning we drank milk out of necessity and lack of other sources of minerals, then as time went on and milk marketing boards were created we were told that milk was necessary to live (there’s that commercialism piece again).  Your  tip today is - you DON”T need to drink milk to live.  There are many other sources of vitamins and minerals that aren’t so hard on our body.  It is very difficult to digest cow’s milk.  Cow’s have 4 stomachs to digest their mother’s milk!  We only have one!  Yogurt, cheese and other dairy sources should be taken in small amounts - ramp up your fruit and veggie intake instead.
