Re(visions) #97 taking control of our health

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Good Morning,

I am into day 3, that is 3 days in a row of being on my own, I am getting into the groove and thoroughly enjoying my independence.  Thanks for your notes last week after Re(visions)  they were much appreciated.

I have been thinking some more on how we, as free and independent people, can begin to foster our own health care instead of leaving it in the hands of general practitioners and government (in Canada we get alot of our health care paid for) who don’t have the time or the education to go beyond treating the symptoms.   To be fair some GP’s and Nurse Practitioners do inquire as to your mental and emotional health but if there is anything really wrong they don’t have the extra time to guide you in any depth.  They will give a few pointers about getting enough sleep and getting some exercise which both very valid but many times this is not enough. There are times when they will refer us to specialist - 6 months to 1 year later we might actually get to see that specialist - look at all the time that has passed!  We, as individuals, need to get involved in our own healing and maintence of our bodies and souls.

There are three steps as I see it so far (I’m still not done the book…I know, I’m slow. :) ) to  take responsibility for our mind, body and soul.

1. The desire and commitment (both a monetary and a time commitment) to put yourself and your body first.  The realization that  your health should come before all else as there is nothing else without your health.

2. Willingness to be open and learn about how to keep healthy. Think outside the box of “I’ll see what my doctor says”.  Do some research, find some holistic partners - they know SO much about the body and its intricacies.

3.  Have fun with it!  Use your instincts to point you in the direction that makes most sense for you.  There is so much information out there.  Do it on your own, form a group, hire someone to help you.  It has to interest you so find your interest in terms of your health and go from there.

Nutritional Tip

Being into nutrition and witnessing how food affects myself and others around me brings the old phrase “you are what you eat” into light.  I found a fun link that I wanted to share with you.  I wanted to know the origin of the phrase and I found this piece.   Enjoy!

P.S. - I used what was left of the pumpkin I used to make cookies and some loaves of bread for the kids lunches in our meatloaf on the weekend.  It made the meatloaf really moist and nobdy knew the difference.  I told my husband afterward and he was surprised!
